22 Chromosome

22 Chromosome is the first human chromosome to be sequenced. It represents between 1.5% and 2% of the total DNA in cells. People normally have two copies of this chromosome as all other non-sex chromosomes. Chromosome twenty two spans about 50 million base pairs. Base Pairs are two molecules (nucleotides) on opposite DNA strands that are connected. Adenine (A) forms a base pair with thymine (T), as does guanine (G) with cytosine (C) in DNA. Base pairs is how DNA is measured. There are about 742 genes in this chromosome.

The sequence of human chromosome 22 was completed in December 1999. An international consortium of sequencing centres released into the public domain the genetic code of the 33.5 million bps that comprise the euchromatic portion of human chromosome 22.
