DNA

8 Chromosome represents between 4.5% and 5% of the total DNA in cells. People normally have two copies of this chromosome as all other non-sex chromosomes. Chromosome eight spans about 146 million base pairs. Base Pairs are two molecules (nucleotides) on opposite DNA strands that are connected. Adenine (A) forms a base pair with thymine (T), as does guanine (G) with cytosine (C) in DNA.  Base pairs is how DNA is measured. There are about 984 genes in this chromosome.

Trisomy for this chromosome can cause retarded psychomotor development, long and narrow trunk, dysmorphic facies with blank expression, musculoskeletal defects, eye anomalies, and visceral and other abnormalities ... Head and neck: Expressionless facies, micrognathia, and prominent forehead ... Mouth and oral structures: Averted lips, highly arched or cleft palate, and stretched
lingual frenulum ... Cardiovascular system: Septal defects and great vessel anomalies ... Growth and development: Speech, moderate mental, and occasional growth retardation.
