Haplogroup L

Haplogroup L represents Mitochondrial "Eve", an African ancestor to all humanity. This is what gives us our proof that we are all descended from Africa. You can link yourself with everyone in the entire world as everyone shares this Haplogroup. From there, DNA has mutated through time and environmental situations which separates us now.

L Haplogroup has branched into several subclades to where our humanity branched off. L0, L1, L2, L3, L4, L5 and L6.

L0 was found in East Africa about 150,000 years ago. There are many people in Africa who have L0 Haplogroup. Botswana 100%, South Africa 83% and Namibia 79%. There are different variations of the L0 Haplogroup; L0a is found in 1/4th of people from the Republic of Mozambique in South-East Africa.

L0b can be found in Ethiopia. L0f is found in small frequencies in Tanzania, East Africa. L0d and L0k are found mostly in Khoisans in South Africa.

L1, a sister of L0, is found in East Africa about 150,000 years ago. This mutation in DNA is found in the highest frequency in MBenga Pygmies. L1 has two branches; L1b and L1c.

L1b is found in West Africa and can be frequent in Egypt and Morocco.

L1c is quite frequent in Middle Africa.

L2 is found in West Africa between 68,000 and 118,000 years ago. It can be found in high frequencies in Ethiopia and Yemeni. This Haplogroup is common in 33% of people currently living in Africa.

L3 came out of East Africa around 84,000 to 104,000 years ago. L3 is the Haplogroup that everyone in the world outside of Africa is linked to. Everyone in North America, South America, Asia, Europe and Australia come from the L3 Haplogroup. It is the ancestor of Haplogroup M and N.

L4 is found in East Africa and the Horn of Africa and is important in these regions. High frequencies are the people of Hadza and Sandawe in Tanzania.

L5 is found in East Africa and is a very small Haplogroup. The highest frequency comes from the Mbuti Pygmies at 15%. It is possible to show up in people from Kenya, Sudan, Ethiopia, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

L6 is found most often in Yemen and Ethiopia.
