Who Discovered DNA?

The discovery of DNA hasn't been too long ago, in fact, many people alive today were born before the knowledge of DNA. Who discovered DNA?

Johann Friedrich Miescher, a Swiss physician, is responsible for the discover of DNA in 1869. He was examining pus obtained from opened wounds and noticed an acid substance containing both phosphorus and nitrogen in the nuclei of white blood cells.

Miescher did not know that this was hereditary material nor did he refer to it as DNA. It wasn't until 1952 that DNA was proven to be of genetic material. Alfred Hershey and Martha Chase did experiments with a virus which showed the link with DNA and our entire living history.

Technology has exceeded fast in this field. Since the 1980s-1990s, people have been testing their DNA, as well as the DNA of fossils from the past. It is around this time when scientists realized that everyone is genetically related to the same ancestors.

You can get your DNA tested to find your ancestral origin, ethnicity, living relatives, and much more...
